The job

What does the Texas Land Commissioner do?

The Texas Land Commissioner has a huge impact on your life. Also known as the General Land Office, the Land Commissioner’s office helps fund our public schools, protect our coastlines, provide support to our veterans, and aid in disaster preparedness and recovery.

From the revenue generated on our state land through oil and gas royalties, the GLO helps fund the Permanent School Fund. The PSF provides critical funding to our public schools, stabilizing school budgets and ensuring all districts get the support they need. With the school voucher bill passing through the Texas legislature and defunding our public schools in favor of the wealthy few, our public schools are in desperate need of funding. The PSF is a critical source of funding for our schools.

The GLO also supports our veterans with the resources they deserve, such as land and home loan programs, and long-term care facilities. It protects our coastal lands, funds disaster preparedness projects, and helps communities recover after natural disasters. By holding this office with the honor and transparency that Texans deserve, the Texas Land Commissioner helps ensure that public education is funded, veterans receive the services they have earned, and our state lands and natural resources remain protected for future generations.

Dawn Buckingham has not served Texans the way they deserve. Texans have often been left to fend for themselves—from disaster recovery delays, to long processing times for veterans seeking support, to stalled coastal protection projects, and limited transparency around Permanent School Fund investment decisions.

The Texas Land Commissioner should work for the people, regardless of partisanship, and that is not what Dawn has done. She has prioritized the agenda of Donald Trump and political leaders in Austin and Washington, rather than focusing on the needs of everyday Texans. You deserve better. The office should be for the people, by the people only.
